چکیده

We study stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in laser-fusion conditions with the Eulerian Vlasov code ELVIS. Back SRS from homogeneous plasmas occurs in subpicosecond bursts and far exceeds linear theory. Forward SRS and re-scatter of back SRS are also observed. The plasma wave frequency downshifts from the linear dispersion curve, and the electron distribution shows flattening. This is consistent with trapping and reduces the Landau damping. There is some acoustic (ω ∝ k) activity and possibly electron acoustic scatter. Kinetic ions do not affect SRS for early times but suppress it later on. SRS from inhomogeneous plasmas exhibits a kinetic enhancement for long density scale lengths. More scattering results when the pump propagates to higher as opposed to lower density.

Vlasov Simulations of Kinetic Enhancement of Raman Backscatter in Laser Fusion Plasmas

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is studied in plasmas relevant to inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The Eulerian Vlasov-Maxwell code ELVIS was developed and run for this purpose. Plasma waves are heavily Landau damped in the regimes of interest, and coupled-mode theory predicts back-scattered SRS is a convective instability. Simulations in a finite length, homogeneous plasma show electron tr...

Kinetics of the Raman Instability in a Laser Plasma

The phase space evolution in a non-relativistic and homogeneous laser plasma in the presence of the stimulated Raman scattering is investigated. The mechanism of the electron acceleration in the potential wells of the plasma wave accompanying the Raman backscattering is analyzed by Vlasov-Maxwell simulations. In addition to the interaction with the primary wave a cascading is observed consistin...

Investigation of Scalar Modulation Instability in the Presence of Raman Scattering in Photonic Crystal Fibers

In this paper, by including Raman scattering in the coupled-mode equations, the scalar modulation instability in photonic crystal fibers is investigated. The evolution of the pump, Stokes and anti-Stokes waves along the fiber as well as the conversion efficiency for two cases, with and without Raman effect, are studied. The effect of anti-Stokes seed and the pump depletion on the evolution of S...

2 4 M ar 2 00 6 Aspects of Electron Acoustic Wave Physics in Laser Backscatter from Plasmas

Recent experimental results from the Trident laser confirm the importance of kinetic effects in determining laser reflectivities at high intensities. Examples observed include scattering from low frequency electron acoustic waves (EAWs), and the first few stages of a cascade towards turbulence through the Langmuir decay instability. Interpretive and predictive computational capability in this a...
